About Roman Slack's Hobbies & Interests

Beyond engineering, Roman Slack pursues a broad range of interests: programming, 3D modeling, and architecture; building hardware and woodworking; mountaineering, hiking, trail running, camping, road tripping, and traveling; music production in EDM, hardstyle, and rawstyle; digital art and character design; photography; weightlifting and calisthenics; cooking; reading; and languages. He biked thousands of miles across 2020 to raise money for local trails.

Right after leaving high school, Roman Slack spent a month teaching Spanish in Colombia, then traveled solo to western China to climb mountains in Tibet, reaching a maximum peak of 16,200 feet.

One of his ongoing personal projects is Silence, an open-source silent speech recognition device. It uses EMG (electromyography) to read the electrical signals of the muscles involved in speech, letting a user type and input text by silently mouthing words — with no audible sound — with the goal of building the best open-source silent speech interface.
